Interventionist and CEO of Confidential Recovery Scott H. Silverman visited KUSI News to discuss Recovery Month and it’s national significance.
When asked why there is a need for Recovery Month, Scott answered, “To create days that we are talking about accessing treatment, asking for help, reaching out for information and letting families know that this isn’t your fault, [addiction] is a disease.”
If someone needs help, Scott says, “Get on the phone. They can call me, the county’s got hotlines the federal government’s got hotlines. Get on the phone and get educated. If your car was broken you wouldn’t go on Youtube to find fifteen ways to fix it, you’d take it to the mechanic. So, treat your loved one the same way and get them help. And, if you don’t know how to do that, then get help yourself, and get information, so you can help them navigate what the next steps look like. Because this is a family disease, meaning if you’ve got the problem, everyone else is impacted by it.”
When asked what Scott things is the biggest barrier, Scott replied that the stigma around addiction is a huge problem. People who are struggling with a substance addiction generally don’t want to voluntarily admit that problem to seek help. Scott said that it often comes down to a family member intervening on the person and appealing to them to accept help.
Scott continued to say that the three most important words in English language are “I need help” and appealed the people to not try to do it themselves. You can watch the entire KUSI San Diego Segment here.
