Interventionist and CEO of Confidential Recovery Scott H. Silverman appeared on KUSI San Diego earlier this week to discuss the unfortunate reality that many are facing – job loss. Scott discussed that despite how common this happens, many of us find ourselves unprepared, and things have really changed about how to proceed in the job market in recent years due to technology and other factors.
Since Scott has primarily built his practice on helping people get and stay sober, he knows that having gainful employment is central to many people’s identity and security, and therefore sobriety. Scott reminded viewers that losing a job can feel catastrophic and can be a real test of mental fortitude, but it’s not necessarily your fault.
When asked about what newly unemployed people should do, Scott started out by suggesting that people lean on friends and family to help stay positive and get stabilized. Beyond friends and family, there are other resources for this type of support – including faith-based organizations or online counselors as well.
Then, Scott recommended that the recently unemployed focus on what actions they can take proactively. Looking for resources to find a new position is always a good step, and there may be newer platforms available that weren’t around during your last job search, such as San Diego Workforce Partnership and 211 San Diego.
