This week, Crisis Coach Scott H. Silverman was on KUSI discussing solutions to Homelessness in San Diego. Scott has been involved in homeless issues since the late 1980s, and shared several ideas on potential solutions.
To help the unhoused population, Scott discussed the importance of individualized treatment, or “meeting people where they are.” An example of this would be how a person in their 40s who has been on the street for decades has a different set of needs than a family who has lost their home.
Then, Scott discussed the importance of providing a full continuum of care to the people who are receiving treatment and support. Using the previous examples, some unhoused parties might be able to get back on their feet with job and housing assistance, whereas, more acute substance users who have been on the streets for longer might need more and longer support.
Then, Scott focused on several other solutions to the homelessness crisis, including getting the right professionals in place, and measuring the right metrics.
